What does a media converter do?

Media converters convert the transmission medium from copper cable to optical fiber or vice versa. They increase the max. distance between 2 network nodes from 100m (copper) to up to 120km (fiber). When selecting a model, transmission speeds (100/1G/10G), mode (single-mode/multi-mode), wavelength (850nm/1310nm/1550nm) and connection technology (SC/ST/SFP slot) must be taken into account.
